The Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Organ

The Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ, which rises up on its platform in center stage, has the distinction of being the second largest pipe organ in the upper Midwest. Lance Johnson, a native of Fergus Falls, owns the Johnson Organ Company in Fargo. He spent two years rebuilding and installing A Center for the Arts’ organ from original parts which were brought up from the Granada Theatre in Kansas City, Kansas, in the spring of 1993. A Center for the Arts is now the home of the 100th chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society.

Lance Johnson

Lance Johnson was born and raised in Fergus Falls. His fascination with pipe organs began at Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he would watch the organist play with both her hands and feet. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance.

In the late 60’s he set up his own shop building "Johnson" pipe organs. Today the Johnson Organ Company Inc. has 7000 sq. feet of space in Fargo.

In 1999 he and his staff built one of North Dakota’s largest and most prestigious instruments. The three manual, forty rank pipe organ for Voorhees Chapel/Recital Hall on the campus of Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND.

Lance’s other activities include playing organ scores for silent films, playing organ concerts, teaching organ lessons and teaching sailing.
